Dress shoes should fit snugly with your longest toe about a thumb's width from the front. Your heel should stay firmly in place without slipping. There should be no pinching across the width. Leather shoes stretch slightly, so new shoes should feel snug but not tight. Try shoes on in the afternoon when feet are slightly larger.

The key difference is the lacing system. Oxfords have closed lacing where the eyelet tabs are sewn under the vamp, creating a sleeker, more formal look. Derbys have open lacing where the tabs sit on top, making them slightly less formal but easier to fit wider feet.

Use shoe trees to maintain shape and absorb moisture. Clean with a damp cloth and condition with leather cream every few wears. Polish formal shoes regularly for shine and protection. Allow shoes to rest 24 hours between wears. Store in dust bags away from direct sunlight and heat.
