Men's boat shoes (also known as deck shoes) are ideal for the the summer, or for warm days in general throughout the year. Traditionally worn without socks these airy shoes are usually either a slip-on or lace-up style. The origin stems from 1935 when Paul A. Sperry from Connecticut noticed his dog's ability to run easily over ice without slipping; it was from there he used a knife to cut a siping pattern into the sole of his shoe and the modern boat shoe was born.
Used predominantly by sailors, until they were made into a casual style around coastal areas across the world in the 1980's, the siping pattern that is cut into the sole helps to offer grip on a wet deck. Horner from Red Tape, with its leather upper, follows the traditional style of a boat shoe, whilst the shoes from Dek such as Dawson and Steven also offer a distinctive boat shoe style. Aside from leather you can also find boat shoes in canvas, like Oka from Front.
